#1 Gene Hackman
The French Connection star was found unresponsive in his New Mexico home on February 26, 2025, alongside his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and their dog.
Their mysterious passing remains under investigation.
Though the Santa Fe Police initially stated that they did not suspect foul play, authorities later said they had not ruled out foul play in a press conference on February 27.
Gene’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean, said her family suspected that carbon monoxide poisoning caused the tragedy.
An affidavit for a search warrant from a Santa Fe detective mentioned that there were "no obvious signs of a gas leak" at the property and that the circumstances surrounding the case were “suspicious.”
The document notes that the front door was already open when a maintenance worker arrived at the home. Betsy was found on the bathroom floor next to scattered prescription pills. Gene was discovered in the home's mud room. The couple's German shepherd was also found deceased and two other dogs were discovered alive.

#2 Natasha Richardson
Natasha tragically passed in 2009 from a head injury resulting from a skiing accident in Quebec. She was 45.
The actress appeared fine and joked about the fall, ABC News reported at the time, adding that she initially declined to see a doctor.
The day after the accident, she was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, where she passed from an epidural hematoma (brain bleed).
The actress, known for her work in Nell, The Parent Trap, Maid in Manhattan, and The White Countess, is survived by her two children, Micheál and Daniel, whom she shared with Liam Neeson.

#3 Michelle Trachtenberg
Michelle, known for her roles in Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, passed away at 39 on February 26, 2025.
Her mother found her unresponsive in her New York apartment early that morning.
Michelle’s family objected to an autopsy for religious reasons, as per Entertainment Weekly.
Police stated that "criminality [was] not suspected.” The actress had undergone a liver transplant a few months earlier.

#4 Princess Diana
Diana was in a car with her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, his bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, and chauffeur Henri Paul when the vehicle crashed in a tunnel.
According to the BBC, the princess' Mercedes was being pursued at high speed by photographers on motorbikes when it hit a pillar and smashed into a wall.
She was transported to a hospital in Paris, where surgeons tried for hours to save her life. The only survivor of the crash was Trevor Rees-Jones.
Diana’s unexpected death in 1997 shocked the world. Her televised funeral was watched by over 32 million people in the UK, one of the highest viewing figures ever.

Heath passed away in 2008 at the age of 28, while at the peak of his career.
The New York City medical examiner’s office determined that he had an accidental overdose of prescription medication, including sleeping pills, painkillers, and anti-anxiety medication.
Through his eclectic acting career, the Australian actor starred in 10 Things I Hate About You, Brokeback Mountain, I'm Not There, and The Dark Knight. The latter, released posthumously, earned him an Academy Award.

#6 Naya Rivera
The Glee actress drowned in 2020 when she was trying to help her then four-year-old son, Josey, swim back into their rental boat after it drifted in Lake Piru near Santa Clarita, California.
Her body was recovered following a five-year search. She was 33.
“He said that the last thing she said was his name, and then she went under, and he didn’t see her anymore," Naya’s ex, Ryan Dorsey, told People. "It just rocks my world that he had to witness her last moments.
“He feels like he could have saved her. I think she just got caught up in a brush — that or a weird undercurrent from the dam. It was just a freak occurrence."

#7 Liam Payne
Liam, who was a member of the boy band One Direction, fatally fell from his balcony at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October 2024. He was 31.
The hotel manager had previously called police to report an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of substances and alcohol.” Two men accused of supplying the singer with illegal substances remain in prison, facing prosecution and a probable trial.
If found guilty, the men, a waiter and a hotel worker, could face prison sentences of between 4 and 15 years.
Liam's body was repatriated to the United Kingdom on November 6, 2024, and his funeral was held at Saint Mary's Church in Buckinghamshire.

#8 Paul Walker
Paul’s life was cut short in 2013 while he was riding in his friend Roger Rodas’ 2005 Porsche Carrera GT. The vehicle crashed into a tree and concrete lamp post, bursting into flames seconds after the impact. He was 40.
Roger, who also lost his life, was reportedly driving at more than 100mph.
On the day of the tragedy, they were reportedly leaving a charity event to raise funds for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
The Porsche had been stalling and Roger, the owner of an auto racing shop, suggested that they go for a drive to try to diagnose the problem, as per E! News.

#9 Whitney Houston
Whitney was found unconscious in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in 2012.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office determined that the iconic singer and actress accidentally drowned due to the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and coc*ine use." She was 48.
Police stated that there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent.”
The day after the tragedy, the 54th Grammy Awards took place, becoming a tribute to one of the best-selling musicians of all time.

#10 Jayne Mansfield
Jayne’s car crashed into a tractor-trailer in New Orleans while traveling between 60 and 80 miles per hour in 1967. The Golden Globe-winning actress lost her life at the age of 34.
The other vehicle had abruptly slowed down due to an approaching mosquito insecticide fog-spraying truck.
Three of Jayne’s children, including Law and Order’s Mariska Hargitay, and two other adults were in the car. All children survived with minor injuries.

#11 Steve Irwin
Australia’s famed “Crocodile Hunter” was stabbed by a stingray in 2006.
His crew had been filming the creature for several minutes in chest-deep water and decided to try to get one final shot of the stingray swimming away when it began wildly stabbing Steve, the Associated Press reported.
The barb on its tail went through his chest and pierced his heart.
The 44-year-old conservationist left behind his wife, Terri, and their two children, Bindi and Robert.

Aaliyah’s life was cut short in 2001 when she was among the nine passengers aboard the Cessna 402 light aircraft that crashed in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas. She was 22.
The singer, known as the Princess of R&B, has been credited with helping to redefine the genre. Her accolades include five Grammy nominations and two Video Music Awards wins.

Anton’s vehicle rolled backward down his steep driveway and crushed him against a security gate in 2016.
His Jeep Grand Cherokee was reportedly included in a recall of 2014 and 2015 models of the SUV around the time of the tragedy following complaints of gear shift issues.
The actor, who passed at 27, was known for his roles in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, Terminator Salvation, and work on several independent films.

#14 Buddy Holly, J.p. "Big Bopper" Richardson, Ritchie Valens
Rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson lost their lives in a plane crash in 1959. They were 22, 17, and 28 years old, respectively.
Buddy and his band were touring at the time across the American Midwest, and the musician had invited rising artists Ritchie and J.P. to join him.
Soon after takeoff, the pilot lost control of the charter plane due to poor weather conditions, resulting in the tragic loss of all four people on board.

#15 Carrie Fisher
The actress, who famously portrayed Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, lost her life from cardiac arrest at the age of 60.
Carrie had taken ill on a flight from London to Los Angeles in December of 2016 and was taken to hospital when the plane landed, where she passed away four days later, the BBC reported.
"She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers,” said a spokesman for her daughter, Billie Lourd.

#16 Elvis Presley
In 1977, the world lost the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll at the age of 42. According to Dr. Jerry Francisco, the Shelby County coroner who conducted an examination of his body, Elvis’ cause of death was a heart attack.
However, the presence of prescription medication in his body prompted speculation about its involvement in his demise.
More than half a century since releasing his first LP in 1956, Elvis remains one of the most beloved musicians of all time.

#17 Isadora Duncan
In 1927, while Isadora, a famous contemporary dancer, was traveling in Nice, France, her long scarf became entangled in one of the rear wheel axles of her sports car, pulling her from the open vehicle and breaking her neck. She was 50.
Before she departed, Isadora reportedly told her friends, Adieu, mes amis. Je vais à la gloire! ("Farewell, my friends. I go to glory!"), though other reports claim she said Je vais à l'amour ("I am off to love").

#18 James Dean
The eternal Rebel Without A Cause lost his life in a tragic car crash at the age of 24 in 1955.
He was traveling to a sports car racing competition when he was involved in a car crash at the junction of the then-U.S. Route 466 and SR 41. The 550 Spyder he was driving collided with a Ford Tudor sedan near Cholame, California.
The Ford vehicle, driven by 23-year-old student Donald Turnupseed, was turning at an intersection when the two cars collided. The student reportedly said he did not see the Spyder until after he was turning left onto SR 41. James had been ticketed for speeding two hours before the crash.
Approximately 600 mourners were in attendance at the young actor’s funeral, with another 2,400 fans gathered outside the Fairmount Friends Church in Indiana during the procession.

#19 Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes
Lisa lost her life aged 30 when her rental SUV rolled several times after hitting two trees in Honduras. She was reportedly in the country to volunteer at a children's development center.
She was not wearing a seat belt. The Not Tonight singer was buried at Hillandale Memorial Gardens in Lithonia, Georgia.

#20 Robin Williams
Robin was found unresponsive at his home in Paradise Cay, California, in 2014. He was 63 years old. The final autopsy report concluded that the actor and comedian had taken his own life.
The report noted that Robin had depression and anxiety and suffered from diffuse Lewy body dementia (LBD), which may have contributed to his depression.
"However you look at it—the presence of Lewy bodies took his life,” said his wife, Susan Schenider, describing the disease as "the terrorist inside my husband's brain.”

#21 Brandon Lee
While filming the 1994 superhero film The Crow, Brandon suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen on set due to the crew’s negligence in not removing the primers from the cartridges in the triggered pop gun.
His life and career were cut short by the accident at the age of 28.

Jeff drowned while swimming in the Memphis harbor in 1997. He was 30. The wake of a passing tugboat reportedly swept him away from shore and under water.
Rolling Stone named his version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. It also included his only studio album, Grace, in three of its lists of the 500 greatest albums.

The legendary basketball star was among nine people who died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, in 2020. He was 41.
His 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was also among the victims.
Regarded as one of the sport's greatest players, Kobe won five NBA championship titles and was an 18-time All-Star.

#24 Michael Jackson
Michael lost his life to acute propofol intoxication in his Los Angeles home at the age of 50 in 2009. His personal physician, Conrad Murray, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after administering the intravenous anesthetic and anti-anxiety medication.
The King of Pop’s comeback tour, This Is It, was scheduled to begin in London a month later.
Murray was released from prison in 2013, serving two years of his four-year sentence for good behavior.
